 Manchester Airport catalyst for local economy boost

Back in April we wrote an article explaining Manchester’s plan to regenerate the local economy through their ‘Airport City’ – a huge new development intended to create up to 13,000 new jobs in the area.  We also mentioned how MAG developments, the property and development arm of Manchester Airport, were hopeful of bringing investment from ‘leading international companies.’

This week it has been announced that the low cost airline Ryanair is coming back to Manchester as they seek further expansion and the move will create hundreds of jobs at the airport. Due to open in October of this year, the airline will be serving 17 destinations to begin with and hopes to fly over 2 million passengers per year. This significant development to Manchester represents an investment of more than £175 million in the airport.

Ryanair have indicated that this move to the city will sustain up to 2,000 jobs at the airport and surrounding area. Chief Executive Michael O’Leary was quick to announce the news earlier this week and issued a statement saying:

‘Ryanair is delighted to unveil Manchester as our 45^th base with 26 routes. Now Manchester consumers/visitors can beat the recession and escape EasyJet’s and Jet2’s high fares by switching to Ryanair’s lowest fares and our no fuel surcharge guarantee to 26 exciting destinations in Italy, Germany and Spain among others.’

Manchester really is starting to see a surge of interest from international companies and private investors as they seek to capitalise on the feel good factor coming out of the city at the moment. Last week we also added an article explaining that parts of the city centre are almost full to capacity as more and more people look to use rental accommodation. Bear in mind too, that the BBC recently announced it was moving a large part of their television network to Salford in Manchester.
