Manchester set to grow with new £600m Airport City plan.
Manchester continues to go from strength to strength as plans are set to be submitted by the end of this year for the city’s new ‘Airport City’. The proposed 60 acre is planned for land to the north of the airport and is one of the Governments proposed ‘enterprise zones’ outlined in the recent Budget. The development will be called ‘Airport City’ and is forecast to create 7000 to 13,000 new jobs, a huge boost for the area. Detailed planning applications are expected to be submitted later this year with work scheduled to start in 2012.
MAG Developments, the property and development arm of Manchester Airport Group, have stated they are hopefully of bringing investment from ‘leading international companies’ to the development. The scheme is likely to attract businesses and offices that would benefit from the close proximity to the airport and its associated transport links. Charles Cornish, Chief executive of MAG, said recently that ‘our development programme will expand the world freight terminal, create new business space, attract global businesses and provide health related uses’. Interest is already growing, as confirmed by Stephanie Mullenger, the business development director of MAG, who recently commented ‘we are talking to a number of national and international businesses. Some are obviously airport related, some are manufacturing, some are just big international companies, but there is a lot of interest already’.
MAG Developments have apparently been working on the scheme for some time before the chancellor made his announcement so are well prepared to see the plan through to completion. ‘Airport Cities’ already exist in Amsterdam and Barcelona and we understand that MAG intends to follow a similar model. Companies that already have a presence include PZ Cussons who moved to Manchester Business Park next to the airport last year.
Miss Mullenger also commented that ‘If we can get Airport city right, it could make Manchester and the North West a more attractive place to be. It creates more jobs, it brings investment into the city and investment into the North West’.
This is another clear boost to Manchester and another reason to invest in the area – an influx of business means an influx of people, all needing somewhere to live. Please contact us to discuss any of our Manchester properties.
