Montenegro receives boost from European Commission
In what will surely be another boost to the country, earlier this week the European Commission recommended starting EU accession talks with Montenegro, only five years since they declared independence from Serbia.
Achieving membership of the EU requires a country to meet specific political criteria and Montenegro has made good progress in this area, particularly by addressing the key priorities outlined in the Commission Opinion (November 2010). Areas to be strengthened included the electoral framework, the independence and accountability of the legal system, work of parliament, the de-politicisation of public administration, media freedom and anti-corruption policies and good progress is deemed to have been made in each of these areas.
The Government have made positive steps towards anti-discrimination policy and the protection of displaced persons, particularly around guaranteeing their legal status, and have also been praised for improving their record in addressing and preventing organised crime and corruption. Added to this is the ‘significant compliance and progress achieved’ in areas such as company law, public procurement and science and research.
There is still a long way to go but Montenegro should be proud of reaching this stage after only five years of independence.
