New UK Crime Map Good for Buyers
You may have heard the media reports regarding the launch of a new website set up to reveal crime trends and statistics from England and Wales. The intention of the site is to give easy access to the general public in order for them to learn more about the places they live and the places they may want to move to.
The crime map is published by the Police through a new system implemented by the home office. The map covers England and Wales with colour coded maps revealing burglary, car crime and other offences. The site also allows you to access local policing teams in the areas you may be considering moving to.
Industry experts have been quick to comment on the new site, believing this easily accessible data will dramatically affect the way that buyers research a new property on the UK housing market. One leading expert said, “Buyers and sellers no longer have to run around making their own enquiries when researching an area to buy their next home. Our experience shows that buyers sometimes receive bias information from estate agents and vendors about how safe a neighbourhood really is. Now they have access to truly independent data.”
Andrew Turner, Head of the Residential Agency at Smiths Gore "While it is unlikely that the publication of crime statistics will deal a blow to the property market, property valuations are likely to come under increasing scrutiny with the introduction of the crime map. While we wholeheartedly agree that crime and anti-social behaviour cannot be swept under the carpet, surveyors are waiting to see if the crime map will impact on valuations to lenders".
The scheme has actually been in play for some time with individual police forces posting their own maps online since last summer when then home secretary, Jacqui Smith announced the scheme. It is only through this new website launched last month that all the maps have been put together to form a complete picture of crime in England and Wales.
