Solar power ‘most lucrative for investors’ in alternative energy sector

A recent report has shown that return on investment from solar power is more lucrative than any other renewable energy source. A new report by SBI has shown that large scale technological improvements are expected to bring down the cost of solar power by half, every 10 years.

SBI estimates that the global PV investors market, which currently values at £5.5billion - $5.8billion, could get to $7.5billion by 2015 and since 2000 cumulative PV installations have grown at an annual compound rate of 35%. Arun Kumar, the author of the SBI report, stated that “During 2011 – 2012 we expect a short term lull in the European Union PV market... but this will be offset by installations in the high growth markets of North America and Asia, China in particular”. India also holds long term growth potential, with targets for 2020 around increasing the share of renewable energy generation.

Google, the internet search engine, are also investing and will provide $75million (£48million approx) to build 3000 residential solar power systems across America. In a similar fashion to many solar power investors, Google will own the solar panels and over time will get paid for the electricity purchased by customers. Homeowners will be able to install systems on their house for little or no money upfront and instead will pay a monthly fee, equitable to their usual monthly power costs.

Alternative energy is a hot topic at the moment, especially since the nuclear meltdown at Fukushima, and the increasing price of natural gas could benefit solar power investors.
